Thinking of getting yourself a brand new PC monitor? Unsure of what would be best for you? Fret not, and let us guide you through it. They say that eyes are the windows to the soul –– but for your PC, the monitor is your window. If you do not get a monitor with the right display, everything will seem a little monochrome, dark, and boring –– be it when you are gaming, editing videos, or photos. With different display specs and features affecting the overall user experience tremendously, there’s a wide range of different monitors online. But, which one should you purchase that best suits your needs? What’s the difference between obtaining a 4K, 1080p, or 1444p, or just a regular HD resolution, anyway? What kind of monitor would best be suited for gaming versus professional use?

Monitor Shopping Tips

Before you embark on your next shopping trip, here are a few quick pointers to take note of.


Consider the primary use of your monitor. Is it for gaming, work, or regular day-to-day use? If you are a gamer, you would want a monitor that prioritizes fast refresh rates and low response times. For work, it would be good to put more focus on color accuracy. For those regular users, a monitor with a high contrast VA panel would be a good option.


Resolution tells you the number of pixels a monitor has in its width by height format. The higher the resolution, the better the image on the screen. The minimum that you would need should be 1080p or Full HD or HD. If you would like to have even sharper images, then opt for QHD or 4K. More information is at the bottom!

Refresh Rates

This helps you to know the number of times your monitor updates itself with brand new information per second, measured in hertz (Hz). As such, the bigger the number, the better and smoother the images would be. Bigger numbers are good for gamers and they should get a monitor that is at least 75 Hz. There are also gaming monitors that can offer at least one hundred and twenty hertz. For the nongamers, a 60 Hz refresh rate will be good enough.


In general, people should get a monitor with one hundred and nine pixels per inch. This is because pixel density affects the quality of a monitor greatly. If you are choosing a regular desktop, then a 32 inch would be big enough for you. A 32-inch monitor is extremely common and easy to source –– plus, it also usually costs around $1,000 or less.

Curved Monitor

If you would like to have a more immersive experience while on your computer, then we recommend you consider having a curved monitor. These particular forms of monitors help to provide you with a large range of view and are less straining on the eyes. Usually, well-curved monitors are shaped ultrawide and have a minimum length of thirty inches. However, do note that curved monitors are prone to glare when viewed from particular angles.

If you’re thinking of getting a curved monitor, try your best to get a good understanding of curvature specs. A 1800R curvature has an 1800 mm curved radius, and a suggested max viewing distance of 1.8 meters, and so on. It’s good practice to get yourself on that as a viewing distance of one point eight meters to get the best view. The more curved the display is, the lower the curvature will be.

Panel Tech

Now, if you are very particular about your image quality, this is something you should take note of. A good rule of thumb is to remember that TN (twisted nematic) < IPS (in-plane switching) < VA (vertical alignment. TN monitors are the fastest and the cheapest but have a poorer image quality when it is being viewed from a side angle. An IPS monitor has a little faster response, and display color better than VA monitors. However, VA monitors have the best contrast out of the three.

If we put this into context, here’s what we get. Firstly, TN has the fastest and refresh rates, minimal motion blur, and low response times. It’s also the cheapest but has poor image quality and bad viewing angles. These are best suited for gaming. VAs have the longest response time out of the three and hold better viewing contrasts than TN. It has the best contrast and image depth, making it ideal for day-to-day use. Lastly, IPS contains slower response times than TN but faster timings than the VA but contains slower response rates compared to TN. It holds the best viewing angles and color quality and is relatively more expensive. IPS’ is made for a professional audience.

Our recommendation is to go for computers with good contrast as they make an important factor in determining image quality and reliability. However, selecting a panel with supposedly “poor” displays may not even result in you noticing the difference!

What Monitor Resolution Should I Get?

In order to attain the best picture, you would need a monitor that has more pixels. However, these pixels can slow you down in your game if you do not have a powerful graphics card. The majority of video interfaces are not able to aid refresh rates that go higher than 60Hz for 4K, UHD, or 5K signals. You would need a rather pricey graphics card to play on a 4K whilst going at 60 frames per second. Currently, the recommended option would be to get a QHD of around 2560 x 1440 resolution. Now that monitors can go up to 32 inches, getting a monitor that has good pixel density and detailed image is not too pricey.

On the contrary, gamers should have speed at the top of their list. This means having high refresh rates on a monitor that has a 1920 x 1080 resolution. However, try avoiding stretching a revolution over 27 inches, as image quality will start to dip.

What Should My Refresh and Response Time Be?

In the best-case scenario, you’d want to get a monitor with at least a 75 Hz, with the lowest response time you can come across. For gamers, refresh rates are especially important –– so most gaming laptops have a refresh rate of around 120 Hz (the fastest ones are 360 Hz), with a response timing of five ms.

Should I Purchase Overdrive Or Motion Blur Reduction?

Overdrive and motion blur reductions are available for most gaming monitors. First, we need to understand ghosting –– a phenomenon where a blurry trail is created when an object moves across the screen. This is caused by uneven pixel transition when a monitor is taking longer to change from Color A to Color B than Color B to Color A.

Purchasing overdrive reduction reduces ghosting by accelerating the rate at which pixels transition by increasing voltage power. On the other hand, motion blur reduction maintains a steady stream of motion resolution when on-screen action is increased. Do note that there’s a chance of which motion blur reduction can reduce your monitor’s brightness by over 60%.

Features For General Monitors

Both professional and gaming monitors are more than able to act as general display monitors. However, if you don’t want to end up purchasing another specialized monitor, find a general monitor that works well for entertainment, productivity, and computing purposes.


Contrast is the first indicator of image quality, followed by saturation, accuracy, and resolution. As such, you’ll want to get a monitor with VA panels, as they can provide your display with more realistic and 3D-like images –– almost three to five times the contrast for TN or IPS screens.


Contrary to popular belief, having low-light isn’t a necessary staple to have. Whilst it’s able to make computer images less straining on your eyes, so could accurate calibration. Plus, since having low light affects other color saturations, your graphics and photos might end up looking unnatural –– which can be distracting to have, especially during games and videos.

Calibration Options

Your calibration options should include options for different color gamuts, gamma curves, and color temperatures. At the very least, you need to have sRGB and Adobe RGB standards with temperatures ranging from 5,000 to 7,500K, and gamma presets from 1.8 to 2.4.

Buying a monitor is a worthy investment that can benefit you whether you’re doing work or gaming.
